A few weeks ago, the film Cloud Atlas was released in theaters, leaving general audiences lukewarm on the massive experience. While some felt the film was uneven, others declared Cloud Atlas the height of cinema, and directors Andy & Lana Wachowski, along with German director Tom Tykwer, should be commended for their ambitious efforts.
One of the segments of the film that most people can agree on is the future world of Neo Seoul in the year 2144. The high-octane science fiction portion of Cloud Atlas was full of excitement, thrills, and imagination. Too bad most of the film couldn’t sustain the high points of the Neo Seoul sequences. Below is artist Adam Kuczek’s concept art of the future landscape. Not only did Kuczek conceive the lavish cityscapes, he also developed the weapons and vehicles of Neo Seoul.
Along with artist George Hull’s concept art for Cloud Atlas, Kuczek gives a more refined and detailed look at the future. Their work is exciting and lush and brings the film to life. Kuczek will return to work with the Wachowskis again on their new science fiction film, Jupiter Ascending. Hull worked with the Wachowskis on their past films, including the Matrix Trilogy and Speed Racer. It’s unclear if Hull will work with them again on Jupiter Ascending, but we can only hope he will join the team to bring that film to life.
While Cloud Atlas was a disappointment to some, the film is a unique look at the human condition, albeit a rather obvious one. Cloud Atlas will live on to be one of the most ambitious films of 2012, and perhaps it will gain some more recognition throughout the years. One thing is clear with Cloud Atlas; everything looks amazing!
